Sigh. The irony of ponies. Too small for adults. Too diabolical for children.
We had a Shetland at the lesson barn where I ride and volunteer. He used to escape and wander the suburban streets, grazing in people’s flower beds.
His owner got to know all her neighbors. Finally she “sat him down” and told him: no more escaping or he’d be rehomed. He never did it again! (He still raided the grain bins and threw the odd child, because, well, he was after all a pony, but no escaping).
Had he understood her threat? Of course he did. Ponies are smarter than most people. I am convinced they understand our language (and in fact eavesdrop).
Hahah I love this description! Truly all the ponies in my parents’ stories want nothing to do with the children who they were given to.
What a funny mischievous Shetland who understands exactly what people are saying and does whatever he wants. 😂
My mom said her grandparents bought a pony meant for the grandkids to ride, but it was too mean and bit all of them except for the eldest cousin. The pony and her eldest cousin teamed up to terrorize the other cousins though, throwing corn and chasing them into the ditch.
As you said, too small for adults, and too diabolical for children.

Aww! I love that he's so into horses. Too bad we're not neighbors, I could hook him up. Lol.
I'm on the road back from WI but once I get back I'll polish up the essay I wrote while I was there and it might qualify as barn sour adjacent 🤔
Glad you’re back and looking forward to the next essay! Channeling you with all the horse stories these days 😂🐴
I noticed! I was intrigued as soon as I saw the title lol.
I'll catch up more tomorrow on reading everything I've missed whilst in the hinterlands lol
